The Boland Guest List Wednesday 3rd March: First Guest is Marine Biologist and wild life film maker, Dr Martha Holms who wrote the headline ‘ The Price We Pay For Caging Them’ she is of course referring to the tragic death a killer whale trainer in Florida’s Sea World. She went on to write: I've seen orcas killing all sort of different prey and, although there are no reliable reports of them ever killing a human in the wild, I know what they can do. They are intelligent, resourceful and infinitely adaptable creatures; killing prey is simply what they do best. So, on one level, it's tempting to say that the tragic death this week of Mrs Brancheau was simply a result of the whale following its natural instincts. And that might, conceivably, be true; killer whales can certainly take prey from the shallows, as anyone who's seen that incredible footage of them hunting sea lion pups on a Patagonian beach in the BBC's Blue Planet series can attest. But all my instincts, as both scientist and conservationist, are that Tillikum was not acting naturally at all. I'm convinced that keeping such big marine creatures in such small water parks is cruel and places the animals under tremendous stress.
Next Guest is a UFO expert, here we go, this already sounds that it would be better suited to the Gilmore show!!! Britain's Ministry of Defence is destroying all UFO reports it receives so it can avoid answering Freedom of Information requests. According to a formerly secret MoD document that Boland next guest Dr. David Clarke has obtained using the Freedom of information act, this decision means that any future sightings - even those made by reliable sources such as aircrew, radar and police - will in future be shredded after 30 days. Make up your own minds I think Boland will say at the end of this interview…
As its Wednesday it means the second hour of the Boland Show is ‘Enterprise’ looking at Three very different but equally successful entrepreneurs: Jane Winkworth Founder of French Sole. In the mid-1980s, while on holiday in Spain, Winkworth came across a small shoe shop that was closing down and snapped up all its ballet shoes. Back home, her friends bought them. Realizing how popular the shoes were, Winkworth thought of selling them as a hobby to raise money for charity. She spent a year going back and forth to France researching and visiting factories that made ballet shoes for famous brands. Winkworth’s first shop, which she opened in 1991 in Fulham, was an immediate success. French Sole now has four shops in the UK and four under its sister brand in America, London Sole, which she set up in 2003 with her son Ben. This year the company expects to have total sales of about £6m. It employs 60 people.
Next up is Dawn Gibbons who is this weeks star of TV’s Secret Millionaire one of Maurice’s favorite show who made her fortune in property.
And finally Kerry Kolbe, Millionaire film entrepreneur, who saw is company Signal Films winning the Daily Mail enterprising young Brits competition.
