The Thursday Boland Guest list (4 days countdown to the WOW Factor final, ahhhhh, help!!!!) One of Maurice’s favourite guests is journalist and author Quentin Letts who writes for a number of British newspapers including the Times, The Mail, Telegraph and is a contributor to The Oldie and Statesman magazines. Maurice will tell you that Letts is one of the most straight talking guests he has ever had. He says
“You see them clack-clacking along the pavement, fat-faced British girls with goose-pimpled thighs ill fitting skirts so high they could pass as belts en rout to the disco” Quentin Letts holds Germaine Greer responsible for at least some of this destruction of feminine modesty and decency!!!! And that’s just a sample of what he’ll be talking about to Boland when he introduces us to the second outing on the show of his book; ‘Bog Standard Britain’ which is being serialized in the Daily Mail.
Boland’s next guest, Charlie Walduck described his childhood as pretty uneventful and fairly happy. At the age of 11, when he started secondary school he was constantly tempted by the pie shops and café’s that he needed to walk past to get there from his home. All the money from my paper round went on snacks. He started part time work at a holiday camp during the summer months – and all of my money earned went on food. By the age of 18 he weight in at around 25 stones. However, he suffered a chronic lack of confidence coupled with low self esteem saw him fall into a dead end job and a cycle of binge eating and depression. The years that followed saw the weight continue to pile on and despite spells of weight loss he would always put it back on and more. By January 2003, he weighed in excess of 50 stones !!! This is an extraordinary story which he will explain to Maurice he eventually lost 30 stone in 2 years. since then he has run marathons, hosts a DJ slot on Manchester radio.
You’re not going to believe this but Gentle Fudge, Truth Bullock, Obedience Ginger, Edward Evil, Susan Booze, Philadelphia Bunnyface, Elizabeth Disco, Charity Chilly, Offspring Gurney, Boadicea Basher, Fozzitt Bonds, Faithful Cock – and more than 1,000 other strangely-named people from Cornwall! Russell Ash has spent years compiling this list and many more for his new book: ‘Busty, Slag and Nob End’ is an extensively researched, entertaining journey through the world of rude, hilarious and ridiculous names of people, places and products.. If you the listeners have any more samples of Funny names, please join in and share them with Maurice on his show tomorrow morning.
And finally Mark Rees will share his story of love, passion, sorrow and the fast life of one man’s desire to be ahead of the rest who is sold down the river by those he trusted most ending him in prison and his quest for justice and ultimately revenge, the person responsible for him being put behind bars is rumoured to be living among us!!!!!
Boland on Thursday at 10am
